Red Bull’s got the wings back
The Red Bull dominance is more obvious than ever. After being over a second faster than everyone else in qualifying, both Red Bulls take the front row on the grid. This race was purely a show of Red Bull's performance first by Vettel and then by Webber.
Webber took the chequered flag and retakes the championship lead. Very depressed Vettel comes third while a happy Alonso takes second. It was a brilliant fourth win for Mark Webber after he got race lead thanks to the safety car. The win puts him on top on the Drivers Championship and adding Vettel's third to it puts Red Bull ahead of McLaren and on top on the Constructor's Championship.
His team mate Sebastian Vettel was leading the race until he decided to pit after lap 14 when the safety car came out. Almost everyone else followed suit and chaos ensued in the pits. Nico Rosberg's rear right tyre came loose tumbling down the Sauber pit and missing one of the pit crew by mere inches. A pit crew error forced Robert Kubica to collide with Adrian Sutil. Webber was one of the few cars not to pit.
As the safety car pulled into the pits, Vettel in second, slowed down as he lost radio contact with his team. He, by doing so, held back the entire line of cars behind him creaing a massive lead for Webber. Vettel was punished for the same with a drive through penalty. This meant he and Alonso would change positions at the end of three laps.
Webber's gamble of running on soft tyres for 43 laps paid off in the end as he was able to make a perfect pit stop rejoining the race at 1. After the then championship leader Lewis Hamilton retired from the race due to a gear box failure, a shift in the championship positions was inevitable.
It was indeed a very good result for Red Bull. Jenson Button, the only McLaren to finish the race, placed eighth and gor 4 points. This meant that Red Bull's 40 point haul placed the team eight points clear at the top of the championship table.
Behind the Red Bulls and Ferraris is Vitaly Petrov with his best performance ever. Having outqualified Robert Kubica he finished fifth, and along with Nico Hulkenberg was the only other driver to remain unlapped.
Pedro de la Rosa made Sauber proud with seventh place, ahead of defending champion Button. Kamui Kobayashi also got the second team car home in the points, finishing ninth.
Almost 300 grands prix starts and Rubens Barrichello still has it in him. He proved his mettle when he overtook Michael Schumacher's Mercedes for the final point with five laps to go. Schumacher has always been physical in his defence of position but this time he went too far when he pushed his ex Ferrari team mate into the pit lane wall. Rubens with great skill and maybe a little luck got through without a scratch on his car. Schumi was later given a 10 place grid penalty for the next race at Spa.
