Belgian GP Race Report

August 29, 2010

The race started with 5 contenders for the championship. It ended with just 2.

Following a poor start from Red Bull's Mark Webber, Lewis Hamilton acquired the race lead which he held on to whicle claiming the chequered flag, moving him to the top of the championship. His team mate Jenson Button wasn't so lucky. Sebastian Vettel's aggressiveness resulted in him crashing into Button and ending the latter's race. Vettel himself was incident prone. Apart from his collision with Button which resulted in a drive through penalty, he also collided with Force India's Vitantonio Liuzzi, puncturing his rear tyre. His team mate, Mark Webber, although started badly, was able to capture second place at the podium. The fifth possible contender for the championship, Ferrari's #1, Fernando Alonso too had a terrible weekend as he crashed out at lap 38.

Robert Kubica made Renault proud with a good third, his best performance ever, getting him on the podium for the first time this season. Ferrari's Felipe Massa got some points for Ferrari with a P4. Adrian Sutil got Force India into the point scoring position after a long time with a fifth. Rosberg yet again outperforms team mate and seven time world champion Schumacher with a sixth with Schumi coming seventh. Sauber's Kobayashi came in eight and the other Renault driver Petrov came in ninth. Toro Rosso's Alguesuari finished tenth but got penalized for cutting the final chicane and had 20 seconds added to his time. This awarded Force India's Vitantonio Liuzzi the final point scoring position.

The Race was incident prone primarily because of the rain. A short spell saw the race off to a start. This ruined the race for both Alonso and Barrichello. The Brazillian, Barrichello, who celebrated his 300th GP, was not fortunate enough to finish the race. Alonso was considerably lucky as he was able to drive away from the crash. The second spell towards the end of the race saw a great deal of cars spinning out of control, forcing the racers to shift to the wet weather tyres. During this much heavier rain, visibility was at a dangerous minimum. With cars slipping and sliding all over the track, it's amazing how the only car that crashed during this downpour was Alonso, who crashed into a wall and broke his front suspension.

With Vettel, Alonso and Button not scoring any points in this race and as we draw closer towards the end of the season with six more races to go, the battle for the championship has been reduced to two – Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber. But the remaining six races still leave room for an interesting shift in odds.
