Red Bull Racing wanted to hire Gerhard Berger, but he instead chose the sister team, Scuderia Toro Rosso. Like with Red Bull, Toro Rosso was set when Red Bull drinks bought out Minardi but they cannot yet move out of Faenza Italy, since Minardi boss Paul Stoddart insisted the team stay there till the end of 2007 at least. Although Minardi was not the most successful of teams, they did have their legion of followers who did not take too kindly to the sale and the renaming of the team to Toro Rosso. They even started an online petition that some 15,000 are said to have signed.
With just one season under their belt, there isn’t much to judge the team with. Vitantonio Liuzzi moved from Red Bull in 2005 and joined Toro Rosso along with Scott Speed, a product of the ‘grooming school’ of Junior Red Bull Racing in GP2. Toro Rosso too had signed the Concorde agreement and their modification of the Red Bull RB01 was seen by many as a violation of this pact. Nonetheless, they raced on but without any spectacular results.
Their solitary point in 2006 was scored by Liuzzi when he finished 8th in the US GP. Toro Rosso did finish a large number of their races, but were never competitive with their Cosworth engines. For 2007, they will have to use Ferrari engines as the deal Red Bull had signed has now been passed over to them.
They have retained their driver combination from 2006 and Liuzzi and Speed will try to make something of a season this time around. Speed’s seat was in fact confirmed only recently since he was not sure of his long-term commitment to the sport.
While Speed has come to be known as a ‘backamarker’, the team would certainly try and lose the tag. But with mostly recycled and hand-me-down equipment and shared resources with Red Bull, the team’s true competitiveness remains in doubt.
