Kimi Raikkonen eyes World Championship title!
Aug 31, 2005 - 07:11 PM
Kimi Raikkonen has not ruled out a possibility to rob Fernando Alonso of the World Championship title this season. In fact, he is all rearing to zip past in his McLaren, the most likely contender for the title. Fernando Alonso has amassed 95 points in the 2005 season, the highest on the grid; whereas Kimi stand second highest at 71 points.
Now, although it seems like a challenging task for Kimi to reach the top, the 25-year-old Finn has sternly forewarned Alonso that the path to victory might be difficult for the Spaniard. Kimi said, "The situation in both the drivers' and constructors' championships is still open and nobody knows what's going to happen until the last race in October," said Raikkonen. Adding that he would not give up his chase for the title, no matter how the odds might stack against him.
Kimi has won 5 Grand Prix this season and is merely 24 points shy of Alonso's reign. With five more races to win, he hopes to win the forthcoming Turkish GP at Monza---in furtherance of his idea to play spoil-show at Fernando's party. Besides, as teammate Juan Pablo Montoya reiterated at last week's Monza test, "Kimi's McLaren has proved to be the faster car on almost every occasion this summer." And to further add to the resurgence, Kimi is fresh from the two consecutive victories at the Hungarian and Turkish GPs. So what is that which is holding him back? if you would ask him, he would say "nothing is holding me back." And indeed its true! Nothing is holding him back---not even the memories of some unsatisfactory performances during the 2005 season. Kimi said, "The car has the pace to win, and I am not giving up the fight, so we shall see. The car continued to feel really strong and quick in Turkey, which is very encouraging on such a challenging circuit. However, Monza is considerably quicker."
However, CEO of McLaren team, Martin Whitmarsh, admitted that Raikkonen would throw a nose-to-nose combat for the World Championship title, only if Alonso's Renault would falter. Nevertheless he supported the determination of McLaren drivers, which he hoped would pressurise the Renault team. Whitmarsh said, "We demonstrated in Turkey that we have the strongest package and we are in the hunt for both championships. We need to keep the momentum going and do a better job than Renault over the remaining five races and then see what happens. We believe we have the pace in the cars. We are focused on our objective to win the five Grands Prix; however we are aware that Renault needs to make some errors."
