Interlagos, Sao Paolo

The first ever F1 Grand Prix (GP) to be held at the Interlagos circuit was in the year 1973, following the international success of the Brazilian F1 driver, Emerson Fittipaldi. Fittipaldi further imprinted his name in the record books by emerging victorious at this premier Brazilian GP. Since Fittipaldi, Interlagos has been the home track of Brazilian legends like José Carlos Pace, Ayrton Senna and current Formula 1 stars like Team Honda's Rubens Barrichello and Team Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

The land over which the Interlagos circuit is built was initially bought by two local property owners with the intention of building a large housing plan. However, looking at the rough and hilly terrain of the land, the idea was dropped and the housing plan gave way to the construction of a new racing circuit. The circuit has gone through a number of renovations and refurbishments since its conception. The present track has been reduced to 4.309km in length to comply with the new short circuit regulations as put down by the Federation International De L'Automobile (FIA). Nevertheless, the sudden inclines and declines of this hilly circuit set the stage for an exhilarating race.

To complete this 71-lap race, the F1 drivers are tested at every stretch and corner of the track, which boasts of numerous high-speed turns, a long top-speed section and little run-off areas. Given the geographical setup of the circuit, Interlagos demands a lot of hard driving and high agility from the drivers to successfully adapt to this circuit. Among the few who have managed to truly champion this circuit, is Juan Pablo Montoya who set the fastest lap of 1'11.473 in his Williams-BMW car in 2004.

The 2006 Brazilian GP at Interlagos is arguable one of the most memorable races in the circuit's history. The race was noteworthy for two reasons. Firstly Felipe Massa became the first Brazilian driver to win a home Grand Prix at Interlagos since Ayrton Senna in 1993. Secondly, this race marked the end of a glorious career of the seven times Formula 1 Champion, Michael Schumacher. Schumacher had formally announced his official retirement from F1 at the end of the 2006 season, on 10th September 2006 after winning the 2006 Italian GP. The multiple F1 champion, managed an impressive fourth position in his last race at Interlagos despite starting the race in the 10th position.
