1953: Ferrari and Ascari continue to rule
Feb 26, 2008
Little had changed since the 1952 season. The FIA continued to run the F1 drivers championship under F2 regulations making the races less competitive. As was the case with the first three years, there were a lot of races that counted for nothing and only eight that counted for points in the World Championship. One of the other major differences from previous seasons was that in 1953, races were held from January to September. Although there was only one race in January, with the next coming only in May, it did give the FIA the idea to expand on the season. One thing that did not change, however, was the dominance of Ferrari. After they ruled 1952, 1953 only extended their control. With Alberto Ascari in the driver’s seat, only occasionally letting Nino Farina drive, Ferrari ensured that they had an unbeatable combination. Ferrari once again won all the races except for the Indianapolis 500. For Alberto Ascari, he could win only six as Mike Hawthorn and Nino Farina also drove in two races and won. The rules of sharing points among drivers of the same team continued as a result of which there wasn’t any one driver who seemed to have dominated. But it was Ascari all the way.
