Lucas started his career in karting and in 2005 was ranked fifth in the Formula A World Championship. Post that he moved on to Brazilian Formula Renault and finished runner-up.

The Formula Three career leg started in 2003 with a move to Avallone Motorsport driving a Mugen-Honda F301. He finished runner-up inspite of crashing out mid season and missing six races. The same year he also raced in Europe for Prema Powerteam, and finished fourth in one of the races. The next year he made a move to Hitech Racing in the British F3 Championship. On his debut, he scored a podium in Macau. He also bagged two wins and finished eight overall.

In 2005 he returned to F3 with Manor Motorsport, and under the shadow of the dominant ASM pair, Lewis Hamilton and Adrian Sutil, he could only manage to finish third in the championship. Post this great performance, Lucas moved on to GP2 with Team Durango. He fared pretty well, but wasn’t to stunning with eight points and 17th overall.

The highlight was in 2007 when he was signed up by ART Racing, then reigning champions. He was locked in a battle with iSport’s Timo Glock, his current team mate in Virgin Racing. He hadn’t scored a win in the first thirteen rounds, but went on to take a win in Istanbul. Timo eventually won the hard fought season with a win in the sprints. He joined Campos Racing in 2008, but missed on the crown again, eventually finishing third.

The 2009 season was quite the same, although he had switched team again and was now with racing Engineering. Like in 2008, he finished third and with the same number of points!

At the end of 2008 though, he had a test run with Honda Racing, and showed quite impressive pace, coming within 0.5 seconds off the then Honda race driver, Jenson Button. He was then signed by Renault as a test driver.

The final step and the pinnacle was the signing by Virgin Racing, for the 2010 season. This time around it’ll be interesting what new talent can do. Will he have the power to upset the field or would Lucas Di Grassi always remain the bridesmaid?!
