Japanese GP Qualifying: Vettel takes pole

Oct 03, 2009 - 09:11 AM

A clear day so far and the qualifying could well happen on a dry track. But with wet practice and possible wet race, this could be a very interesting qualifying. Because it could still change entirely tomorrow.

Qualifying 1

It's time! Seb Buemi is first out on track and it's a sunny day now. This track is really gorgeous... wide sweeping turns and fast lap times. Also, plenty of chances for overtaking make it exciting for viewers. And Buemi misses the fourth S-turn and goes off track! Jenson Button on track now. Not the quickest yet, but it's his first lap of course. Jarno Trulli also on track and the Toyota is looking a little jittery, but he is a second ahead of the best time set by Liuzzi for now. And he goes a second quicker. Wow.

Alguersuari is third fastest at present and Glock moves into second pushing him lower. Hamilton on track as well now. Barrichello goes 9th fastest, ahead of Fisichella. The Ferrari team have started working on the 2010 car so they won't be too keen. And Vettel is going seriously fast and takes P1. He still has a shot at the title and this ride hasn't done it any harm.

And Vettel has P1. Kubica takes P3. The Force India of Sutil is in P11. Liuzzi has fallen to P18. And Vettel improves on his own time as well. Hamilton is in P13 and Kovalainen in P12. That's trouble! Liuzzi moves up to P15. Webber in P20... Kimi in P10... so Ferrari will have a quiet race. The track is getting cooler now and Brawn GP don't like it! Fisichella has another lap but P18 is all he can do. He really must be thinking about his move now!

Sutil in P15, Liuzzi in P16 for now. And Hamilton goes to P2! What a lap, that one. And it's his first time on this track. And Fisi still stuck on P18! No matter what he does. Romain Grosjean on track now and he will try to move up from P17. Alonso is in p11, into Q2 by the looks of it. And Grosjean goes up to P16.  Kimi Raikkonen also having a tough time on track. KERS not doing too much yet either. But P5 isn't too bad... Sutil hanging on for dear life in P15. Barrichello doing another lap from P12.

Sutil has jumped up to P9 and should safely make it to Q2... but no such luck for Liuzzi. Fisi has moved up to P16, but it's still touch and go. Nakajima at home is struggling in P17. And that can't be good for his 2010 hopes. Heikki Kovalainen trying desperately to move up from P15. Nakajima versus Kovalainen it is for the final Q2 spot. Kazuki falls to P17 and Heikki moves up to P12!

Relegated:

P16: G Fisichella
P17: K Nakajima
P18: R Grosjean
P19: V Liuzzi
P20: M Webber

Qualifying 2

Ferrari is first on track. And Kimi has been doing that a lot this year. His final few races for Ferrari. Will it be McLaren for him next season? P1 for the moment... and a huge accident for Alguersuari. He did so well to make Q2, but that's a wrecked car. Red flags being waved.

Alguersuari is moving, but medical assistance is being asked for. Clock frozen at 11.15 minutes remaining. That was a nasty crash for Jaime. The car is a wreck. Let's hope he is okay, but his kneed won't be... he actually looks like he is stuck. And he's out and being rushed off track.

Session has now been resumed. With just about 11 minutes left, that's going to affect some plans. Jarno Trulli is going super quick at present. Faster than the P1 time set by Kimi Raikkonen before the stoppage. Trulli has P1 for the moment. And Glock has crashed now. Well, it's a nasty qualifying session now! Red flags again. This is not a good morning for the garages. Ironically, it's on the same lap that his team mate Trulli set a P1 time! Perhaps drivers aren't used to having such fast tracks anymore!

Medical help for Glock and this looks more serious than Jaime's crash... Glock is now out of the car finally and is being taken to the medical center on the stretcher. Let's hope he is ok and it isn't nothing serious.

A second restart now and just 8 minutes left for 13 cars to set times. This will be hectic indeed! Alonso out first and Rosberg tailing him closely. Four laps at best possible for everyone. And Alonso becomes the third driver to set a time. Hamilton also on track now. And he takes P1... lots of cars to come through yet. Heikki up to P4. Vettel on track and he will be pushing for the fast times. He takes P3. And here come the Brawn cars. Vettel in his second lap and he is looking food for P1. And he does. Kubica takes P9 on hard tyres. Barrichello on his flying lap and he will get only one. That's the end of the Q2 session. No sign on the Force India...

Another accident on the track and yellow flags. Barrichello takes P5. Buemi has had an accident. And Sutil has P8, Alonso P12. Heidfeld sneaks into P10.

Relegated:

P11: N Rosberg
P12: F Alonso
P13: R Kubica
P14: T Glock
P15: J Alguersuari

Qualifying 3

Alonso walks away disgustedly. And ironically, the accident-affected Buemi has qualified for Q3. So lots of work for Toro Rosso if he can take part. Which looks unlikely. So he will start in P10. And more delays as debris is cleared.

Buemi being summoned by the stewards to discuss his conduct after the accident. They want to know why he didn't pull over to the side and instead chose to drive along when other cars were still on track. Not a good day at all for him.

Finally, Q3 is underway. Long old qualifying Saturday here! Glock taken to a hospital for treatment to an injured leg. Adrian Sutil is first on track and most of the others make a beeline. Perhaps weary of more accidents! For the record, Mark Webber is getting a new car and has therefore not taken part in qualifying and will be starting in P20.

This qualifying session of 10 minutes will decide the top 10. Let's hope there aren't more stoppages. We spoke too soon! Heikki Kovalainen is the latest casualty. And yellow flags are out. Adrian Sutil holding on to the track and he dives into the pits. Red Flags again. So this is a seriously jinxed qualifying weekend. Heikki walks out of his car. So that's good news. We should have a restart soon.

And after another brief stoppage, we are back on track with Kimi Raikkonen and Jarno Trulli. Alonso just told a TV channel that he reckons he will start a lot higher than 12th tomorrow. What's happening in the stewards' room?

Kimi sets the first time for Q3. The Brawn GP cars are getting ready. Not much time left. Hamilton on track as well now. And here comes Nick Heidfeld. Vettel also about to set his time. And Sutil has just started his lap too.Vettel is well inside Kimi's time. He takes P1. Sutil is P4. Jarno Trulli sets his first time and he goes P2. Pity Glock couldn't stay on track. Heidfeld comes in P3. Very impressive for BMW.

Time's up and it's a shootout now. Hamilton coming up to his final lap and he will get only P3. Sutil gets P4. Barrichello P5. Button P7 Kimi down in P8.

Top 10:

P1: S Vettel
P2: J Trulli
P3: L Hamilton
P4: A Sutil
P5: R Barrichello
P6: N Heidfeld
P7: J Button
P8: K Raikkonen
P9: H Kovalainen
P10: S Buemi
