Italian GP Qualifying: McLaren and Force India on front row
Sep 12, 2009 - 04:48 PM
More changes to teams this week as Giancarlo Fisichella moves to Ferrari and Tonio Liuzzi comes to Force India... In practice, Adrian Sutil impressed and Lewis Hamilton scorched the tracks. Force India will be hoping for Sutil to come good and keep the good work from Belgium going. For Ferrari, they would be praying that Fisi can move their second car up from the bottom.
Qualifying 1
Fisichella is first on track as he gets out seconds after the lights turn green. And in what is almost becoming routine, it's Force India next on track. Monza is a popular and historical track and Fisi at home looking good. Although he crashed in final practice this morning, he will be looking to use KERS as often as he can especially leading up to Ascari.
So the first time on the sheets by Fisichella and Raikkonen pips him by a second. Just goes to show how much familiarity with the car helps. And Liuzzi is about 4 seconds off the pace compared to Kimi. Timo Glock now up to P2 with Fisi improving on his time for now. And Raikkonen cuts off more time from his car. This Ferrari looks great... Barrichello gets his first lap on the board and he is in P7 but here's Adrian Sutil in P2 marginally slower than Kimi. Well!
Liuzzi steadily stuck to the bottom. And Barrichello takes P1. Just a lap it took for him to warm up. And Sutil loses time in the final segment there to retain P3. Hamilton has come out and gone back into the pits. And Jenson Button goes P2. God knows he needs it. Rubens and Kimi trading P1s now. The BMWs are looking great for the last few races especially since they announced that they are quitting F1! And Liuzzi moves up to P14 out of the relegation zone for the moment.
And Hamilton is back on track now. Not clear what he was doing back in the garage. Despite a minor wobble, Hamilton is headed for P1. And Button has P1 for now. The Brawns are looking good again at the moment. And Hamilton ha P1. McLaren is looking very good and aggressive indeed.
Liuzzi has picked up speed tremendously and he is in the top 5 quicker than Kimi! Sutil down to P12 but out of relegation. And Fisi goes up to P9. In danger now are Trulli, Buemi, Glock, Webber and Alguersuari. Webber? What's up? Final 4 minutes coming up of the first session. And Webber needs to make a run for it. Nakajima and Grosjean also have to try to improve their positions from P14 and P15 for now.
Rosberg has fallen to P16 and into the relegation zone. Williams struggled in Spa and are now struggling at Monza too. Scorching lap by Rosberg but not good enough to move above P16. Webber has moved up to P9 now and Sutil is down to P14 and he needs to improve seriously.
And Sutil has moved to P10 and into safety. Liuzzi comfortable in P6. Grosjean, Rosberg, Trulli, Buemi and Jaime the troubled guys for now. And Trulli is out of the bottom 5 jumping to P14. And Grosjean goes to P13. Glock doesn't make the cut and Kubica is in danger now as Rosberg has another go. Fisi manages P12 and a Q2. Kimi is quickest for now.
Relegated drivers:
P16: T Glock
P17: K Nakajima
P18: N Rosberg
P19: S Buemi
P20: J Alguersuari
Qualifying 2
Fisichella out on track first up again. And he needs all the time he can get. Can he make Q3? He didn't look quick enough in Q1. And Button also on track now. And he needs all the points he can get here with many drivers having caught up over the last few races. And he hasn't done too well in those to aid his chances. Button has the first time on the sheet and Barrichello beats him already and Liuzzi goes P2 only to have Barrichello and Webber push him down. Lap times falling rapidly. Raikkonen has P7 and P8. And Webber has P1. Kubica into P2. Vettel going quick as well and Alonso even quicker. Sutil up to P3 right away. This Force India is really making strides. And problem fro BMW as Heidfeld quits! Blown engine. What a tragedy.
Lot of time still left in this session and Hamilton not out on track yet. Button, meanwhile has P1. Vettel only P6. Rubens also going strong for now and he could well take P1... and he does so by half a second! Button in P2. Liuzzi down to P11. Hamilton on track now and he is burning up the track! Kovalainen also on track and Hamilton takes P2. Heikki was doing well for P1 but manages only P5. Button into the pits now as is Rubens. Tyre changes perhaps.
In the relegation zone presently are Grosjean, Kubica, Liuzzi, Heidfeld and Fisichella. And Heidfeld will eventually fall to P15 since Fisichella will be back on track soon. Oh. And Kubica also out of the race now. Well, not a good result considering their furure is at stake for next season. So it looks like BMW will start P14 and P15 tomorrow. Kimi on track now and he will want to rise above P9 where he is lodged at present. Too close for comfort! Fisichella also out on track. Liuzzi also out on track now. He's in P13 now... Fisi trying all he can but can't make it above P13. Sutil up to P4! Wow! Hamilton also on track now and he is doing great. Liuzzi goes past Fisichella to P13. Hamilton is quickest and P1 for McLaren! Kimi goes up the ranks to P6. But he's still behind Force India! Grosjean on track now fighting for survival. Fisichella still stuck on P14. And Fisi doesn't make Q3.
Trulli goes into P10 for a second but Liuzzi pushes him out going into P5! And Button has P1! What a final minute that was. Vettel holds on for dear life in P10! Unlucky for Trulli, but Brawn, McLaren and Force India looking impressive! Who'd have thought those would be the teams to watch out for!
Relegated drivers:
P11: J Trulli
P12: S Grosjean
P13: R Kubica
P14: G Fisichella
P15: N Heidfeld
Qualifying 3
The fight is on for the top honours. Can Force India make another fairy tale Saturday? Or will the pace of McLaren and Brawn hold them back? But first on track again is the Ferrari, this time of Kimi Raikkonen. 10 minutes to pole position!
Mark Webber is also on track but not before Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso is also in Q3 almost unnoticed. And he can still make a case for the Renault and himself. All those murmurs about him moving to Ferrari would only get stronger. The Brawn GP cars are not yet out. Just 6 minutes remain. Kimi has P1 for now with Lewis Hamilton in P2. But Hamilton in his second lap is very aggressive. Vettel has P2.
Hamilton all set for P1 now. ANd almost a second faster. That's going to take some catching up to. And everyone else out on track now. Sutil in his warm up lap now. He's given himself two laps at best... same for Liuzzi. Just 3 drivers with times at present... and barely 4 minutes left! It's going to be a busy track now!
The heightened kerbs are sure making life hard for the drivers. Webber has P2, Alonso P3 and Sutil takes P2! Button has P7. Running heavy, it woul dappeal. Raikkonen goes up to P2. Heikki up to P4 and Rubens has P7. Liuzzi has P9. Button takes P6 and launches into his final lap. Barrichello up to P6 as Liuzzi falls to P10. Vettel up to P4. Alonso up to P3. And Sutil takes P1! Whaddya know! Hamilton is still on track, though. Kimi has P2... and Kovalainen has P4. Hamilton heading up to start-finish. And he has P1 comfortably! Tough luck for Sutil. But what a lap that was! A minor wobble in that lap could have cost him P1... but tremendous qualifying for Force India again.
Ferrari has P3, McLaren in P4 again and the two Brawn GP cars in P5 and P6. The two Red Bull cars in P9 and P10.

P3: K Raikkonen

P5: R Barrichello
P6: J Button
