Brazilian GP Live: Webber wins race, Button the title

Oct 18, 2009 - 08:04 PM

Seb Vettel has some work to do to keep his title hopes alive and some early work on the engine doesn't help. But there is also work to do for Jenson Button to close out the title today. Who can win the day?

FINAL LAP: Mark Webber wins the Brazilian GP. But it's Jenson Button's race as he closes out the world championship. Brawn GP wins the Constructor's Championship. Barrichello congratulates his team mate and tears and cries of joy reverberate in and around the Brawn GP team.

Robert Kubica is second, Lewis Hamilton third, Vettel fourth, Button fifth, Raikkonen, Buemi, Barrichello round off the final points positions. This has been some race!

LAP 69: Just two laps left for Jenson Button to be crowned world champion. He can afford to play it safe to ensure he makes it.

LAP 68: No rain yet and Button will be praying for just 5 minutes more of dry track. Webber, for the record, still leads from Robert Kubica. Lewis Hamilton is in third.

LAP 66: Button must hold his nerve and not think of the title yet. And some rain predicted shortly! Kobayashi continues to attack. Fisichella gets dropped!

LAP 63: Barrichello has a puncture. What a tragedy. He has to pit and is now in 8th place. He will score but it is really unfortunate.

LAP 61: Hamilton's front wing has damage and this race could still play out differently. This has been a remarkable race by Hamilton. Started in 18th and spun out of control in the opening lap. Now in podium position.

LAP 60: Kubica is gaining on Webber. But it really looks unlikely he will win it. Barrichello having trouble with the tyres as Hamilton goes past him and Rubes falls to fourth. He is in the podium spot now. And that will ensure that Button wins the title.

LAP 59: Button into sixth place as Kovalainen dives into the pits. So Button is in line to close out the title this race itself.

LAP 58: Kovalainen doing well to keep Button behind thanks to KERS.

LAP 56: Vettel into the pits now. Can he come out ahead of Button? Yes he can as Button is stuck behind Kovalainen.

LAP 55: Button into the pits now. Barrichello will be ahead of him when he rejoins. Great stop. Kobayashi will be ahead of Button. Kovalainen goes past Button as well. Button in 8th now.

LAP 53: Buemi into the pits. He was running 5th. Button will be hoping to close the title race this weekend... he is in third now and Vettel is fractionally behind him.

LAP 51: Webber well ahead of Kubica. And he will pit soon... in fact Webber into the pits now. Can Kubica catch up? No he can't. Webber easily retaining his lead. He is favourite to win now. Button and Vettel continue to slug it out. Button still leads.

LAP 50: Barrichello into the pits. This will be crucial. He rejoins in 6th place. It all went wrong for him in the first stop. Took it too early.

LAP 49: Just 22 laps remain and there will be more pit stops coming up shortly. Those would decide the race.

LAP 46: It's starting to rain a kilometre away from the track and there could be some rain towards the end. Kubica has had his final stop. He rejoins in third place ahead of Button.

LAP 45: Webber leads from Kubica. Kubica is not doing too badly as he continues to eat into Webber's lead.

LAP 43: Kimi in and out of the pits. He will fall out of the top 10.

LAP 40: Button is ahead of Vettel and if they finish like this, it is the end of Vettel's hopes for a title.

LAP 37: Vettel into the pits from second place. He is on a two-stop strategy. He rejoins in seventh behind Button. That'll be fight now! Raikkonen, meanwhile is comfortable in fifth place. Almost unnoticed except for his first lap problem!

LAP 33: Button goes past Buemi but a moment of worry there for Button as Buemi tries to hold on to his position.

LAP 32: Yellow flags out and Kobayashi could also be out of the race.

LAP 31: Nakajima has crashed out with a serious crash. Odd place to crash, really, but he is walking and seems okay. He touched Kobayashi on his out lap...

LAP 30: Kobayashi has pitted as well now. Quick stop. Alguersuari also pits. Hamilton has moved up to P5 just behind Barrichello.

LAP 29: Button has pitted and will perhaps stop one more time. Button rejoins in 10th.

LAP 27: Rosberg in trouble and looks like it's race over for him... Vettel is now trying to get ahead of Kobayashi... he is a handful indeed!

LAP 26: Webber into the pits. Button is the leader now. Webber has rejoined ahead of Button and is in the lead. Great stop. Button looks to be on a one-stop strategy.

LAP 25: And Nakajima fighting Kobayashi and wow, this youngster is aggressive! Vettel comes into the battle to win the battle to no avail.

LAP 24: Button playing crybaby, complaining about Kobayashi. Rosberg into the pits. Buemi also pits. Button has finally gone ahead of Kobayashi.

Heikki and Fisichella's accident to be investigated.

LAP 23: Kubica has pitted and he rejoins ahead of Barrichello. So Barrichello won't be the race leader after the pits. Meanwhile, Button losing out to Kobayashi yet again!

LAP 22: Heidfeld has stalled right after his pit stop. Yellow flags now. Lewis Hamilton trying to go past Barrichello and Barrichello defending aggressively.

LAP 21: Barrichello rejoins ahead of Vettel! And Vettel has now gone forward. He wants his positions back!

LAP 20: There is no forecast for rain right now and that would make things interesting for sure. Barrichello also into the pits now.

LAP 19: Heidfeld into the pits first. When will the leaders come in?

LAP 18: Rubens expected to pit shortly and Webber has instructions to keep in touch. With Barrichello! Kubica, though, is close to Webber and that will add pressure on the Australian.

Heikki and Kimi Raikkonen's incident under investigation.

LAP 13: The race finally settling down as the cars manage to put some distance between each other. There is still a crowded midfield behind Kobayashi, but no seeming chances of a crash!

LAP 11: Barrichello continues to pull away from Webber now as Button is getting frustrated behind Kobayashi's Toyota.

LAP 8: Kobayashi making life hard for Button... but theirs is quite a duel. Barrichello leading from Webber now, but not by much.

LAP 7: Kobayashi holds up Button and goes past to retain P6. Brave stuff. And anxious moments for Vettel as he tries to go past Nakajima.

LAP 6: And Button is doing awesome now gaining positions. Up to P8 and into the points now. Hamilton goes past Alguersuari and he is looking good again as McLaren move to a one-stop strategy.

LAP 4: Restarted now and Barrichello holds up the race to enable a perfect start and is off ahead. Button making a move past Grosjean and let's go at the last moment but goes again and wins the battle with Grosjean... Rosberg and Kubica up in P3 and P4.

LAP 3: Three laps have been completed, two-and-a-half behind the safety car! Replays show that the Trulli-Sutil-Alonso crash was Trulli's fault as he came in from the outside line. Liuzzi pits from P17... the last spot on track.

Drivers out:

  • Adrian Sutil
  • Jarno Trulli
  • Fernando Alonso

OPENING LAP: The cars line up and wait for the lights to go off... and it is odd to see Lewis Hamilton start from P18. But we're off in Sao Paolo.

Barrichello holds on to the lead and he is off as Kimi Raikkonen has KERS work for him but he banged into Sutil but Hamilton is spinning but he is still racing and another crash as Sutil and Trulli bang into each other and Fernando Alonso is also out. Safety car on track. And Trulli yelling at Sutil mid track.

Raikkonen has damage and into the pits, and Kovalainen also into the pits, and he has driven off with the fuel pipe and Kimi is on fire... Heikki's fuel line leaving fuel behind. What an opening lap. Disastrous. For the record, Safety Car is on track.
