The Yas Marina Circuit provided fans across the world with a brilliant spectacle as the final race of 2009. The visually stunning circuit held its first race on 1st November 2009. The unusual day-night circuit gifted the fans with a brilliant race which went on into the twilight. Very symbolically it signified the sun setting on the 2009 season.
The excitement Yas Marina signifies didn’t die out in 2010. With the battle for championship entering its final leg, the race went down to the wire with Sebastian Vettel rising up as the victor.
Yas Marina Circuit is located on an island east of Abu Dhabi City. Yas Island is just one of the 200 islands that form Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The circuit is collaboration between several different parties. The original plan was evolved by creative mastermind Philippe Gurdjian in conjunction with ALDAR, the builders of the track, and Tilke GmbH.
It was initially planned as a street circuit with a semi-permanent section, but on further redesigns, the plan changed and has since become a purpose-built circuit. It is a permanent facility where races can be run on one of three configurations. The full F1 track is 5.55km (3.4 miles) long and comprises 21 turns, 12 left and nine right with an estimated lap time of 1 minute 40 seconds and runs in an anti-clockwise direction. The second and third configurations of the track are shorter at 3.15km (1.9 miles) and 2.36km (1.46 miles) respectively. The two additional tracks can run independently of each other and make it possible for the circuit to hold two events simultaneously.
Yas Marina Circuit is touted to be the perfect combination of style and function. The F1 track (see map reference 01) is 5.55km long. This track can be split in to smaller tracks at 3.1km and 2.4 km each which can operate simultaneously where desired. About 50,000 spectators can view the action on the circuit from the comfort of permanent, covered grandstands and VIP facilities. Yas Marina Circuit is the only motorsports venue in the world where all of the grandstands are covered.
Yas Island is located just 15 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport. A 12-lane highway will connect the airport, Yas Island, Saadiyat Island and Abu Dhabi City Centre. The circuit is approximately a twenty five minute drive from Abu Dhabi city centre.
In the final race of 2009, there were plenty of positions to be traded, most significantly the second place in the Drivers Championship and the battle between Ferrari and McLaren for the third position in the Constructors Championship. Sebastian Vettel went on to claim the checkered flag and secured his second place overall, with McLaren beating Ferrari for the third place by just one point.
Yas Marina Circuit will for the first time not host the final GP of the season, and hand over this privilege to the Brazillian GP.
