Turkish GP: Lap by Lap Report

Welcome to the Turkish GP at Istanbul Park. It is race 7 of the 2010 Formula1 season and has 58 laps.

The Grid:
Mark Webber yet again has pole. Alongside him in P2 is Lewis Hamilton. The other Red Bull Racer, Sebastian Vettel and last year's world champion Jenson Button are on row 2. The two Mercedes drivers, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg are on the third row. Robert Kubica and Felipe Massa are 7th and 8th on the track. The last of the Renaults, Vitaly Petrov and the first of the BMW Saubers, Kamui Kobayashi are on row 5. Adrian Sutil is in P11. A mistake during qualifying puts Fernando Alonso 12th on the grid. Pedro de la Rosa, the last of the BMW Saubers and STR's Sebastien Buemi are on the 7th row. Rubens Barrichello and Jamie Alguesuari are on P15 and P16. Nico Hulkenberg and Vitantonio Liuzzi are on row 9. The Lotus drivers Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen are next on the grid. Timo Glock and Bruno Senna are on the penultimate row. Lucas diGrassi and Karun Chandhok complete the grid.

It is after quite a long time that a race has all the drivers starting from the grid.

Race Start:
Five lights illuminate.... and the race is on!!

Vettel gets ahead of Hamilton and it's a RedBull 1-2. Hamilton doesn't stay back for long, he gets ahead of vettel and starts putting pressure on Mark Webber.

Michael Schumacher pushes and comes out 4th behind Jenson Button but the F-duct advantage allows Button to overtake Schumi with considerable ease.

Alonso can't get ahead and is stuck in P12

Lap 2
Sutil is in 10th and Kobayashi is in 11th. S. Buemi hits the pits with ripped to shreds rear right tyre.

Massa and Kubica go wheel to wheel... literally as smokes arise from the point of contact. Luckily both cars come out unharmed.

Lap 7
Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton are on constant fight for pole. Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button have built a considerable gap between themselves. Michael Schumacher and team Nico Rosberg are battling for P5. Kubica, Massa and Petrov are battling for P7. Adrian Sutil is the last of the top ten.

Lap 12
Alonso comes in to pit. He shifts into the harder tyres. His 22.632 sec pit moves him from 12th to 14th.

Lap 14
Mark Webber keeps Lewis Hamilton behind attempt after attempt. Lewis who is yet to win a race this season is desperate to grab the win that at this moment is just beyond his reach.

Massa and Kubica come in to pit.

Lap 15
Sebastian Vettel dives in to the pits. He shifts to the prime tyres. His pitting moves him to P5.

Lap 16
It's the battle of the pitcrew as Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton come into the pits. It's an obvious mistake from the McLaren team as Mark Webber rejoins the race at P2. And a delay at the Mclaren pit puts Lewis Hamilton 4th behind Sebastian Vettel. Jenson Button is the race leader.

Lap 17
Jenson Button has a 14.7 sec lead over the Redbulls. He dives into the pits at the end of the lap and comes out fourth behind Hamilton.

Lap 18
Lewis Hamilton is radioed by his crew reassuring him ‘40 laps to go. We can still do it.' He overtakes Vettel but loses the position almost immediately.

Lap 19
Its Kovalainen vs Barrichello and the Williams manages to get ahead of the Lotus. Rubens had been struggling to get past Heikki for a long time. It's surprising to see how in its rookie year, Lotus can hold back a Williams.

Lap 24
Mark Webber sets the fastest lap : 1:31.335

Jenson Button through the radio is informed that the rain, a short shower, is about 15 minutes away. He is told that it'll be his opportunity to be ahead on the race.

Lap 28
Alonso is still stuck at P10

Bruno Senna tries to overtake diGrassi but fails. While diGrassi was blue-flagged to let the front runners pass, Senna tries his luck to pass but diGrassi was not fooled.

Lap 29
Michael Schumacher is 5th, Felipe Massa is 8th and Petrov is 9th.

Lap 31
Bruno Senna finally overtakes diGrassi.

Lap 32
Jenson Button sets the new lap record : 1:30.469

Battle for 13th between Pedro de la Rosa and Jamie Alguesuari

Jarno Trulli is out of the race succumbing to mechanical failure.

Lap 33
Kovalainen is out of the race meaning Lotus does not have a finish in Istanbul Park. The hydraulics are to blame for his retirement.

Lap 34
As the rain approaches, the track temperature drops from 48 to 38 and humidity shot up 20% to 49%.

Lap 37
Vitaly Petrov and Fernando Alonso battle for 9th.

Sebastian Vettel sets the fastest lap :1:30.181

Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel fight for pole. Vettel plays too aggressive and collides with Mark and Vettel is out of the race. Mark Webber suffers a damaged front wing and the collision puts Mark in P3 behind Lewis and Button. Webber dives into the pit and gets the front wing replaced, returning to the race in 3rd well behind the McLarens.

Lap 46:
Its still a McLaren 1-2 with Lewis at pole and Button right behind him at P2. Webber is 3rd and far behind. And Schumi is in 4th.

Bruno Senna is out of the race. He has problems with fuel pressure

Lap 48
Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button go head to head. A battle that lasts for about 5 corners ends with Button emerging victorious. A show of talent and an outright taunt at the Redbull team as the McLarens go through the wheel to wheel synchronised overtaking manoeuvres

Lap 49
Lewis Hamilton finds the gap and regains pole right at the start of the lap.

Lap 52
Karun Chandhok retires from the race due to malfunctioning fuel pump. Having completed over 90% of the race, he will be regarded as completed the race, placing him at P20.

Lap 53
It's Lewis Hamilton still leading the pack with Jenson button right on his tail. Mark Webber, Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica, Felipe Massa, Vitaly Petrov, Fernando Alonso and Adrian Sutil completes the top ten

Lap 54
Mark Webber has the fastest lap 1:29.211

Alonso and Petrov fight for position. Alonso finally succeeds. Petrov suffers from worn out tyres.

Lap 56
Petrov dives into pit for a tyre change. He opts for soft tyres. He comes out 15th on the track.

Final Lap
Lewis Hamilton takes the chequered flag followed by Jenson Button making it a Mc.Laren 1-2. Webber and Schumacher come in third and fourth.

The second of the Mercedes drivers, Nico Rosberg is fifth. Kubica and Massa comes sixth and seventh. Alonso after struggling to move up in the race finishes eight ahead of Force India's Adrian Sutil. BMW Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi completes the top ten drivers.

Total Race duration 1:28:47.620

Vitaly Petrov has the fastest lap: 1:29.165.

This is Lewis' 12th GP victory and 1st victory this season. The victory moves Hamilton up from 6th to 3rd on the overall driver standings. The Red Bull incident has put McLaren back in the race for championship. Though Mark Webber still leads the driver standings, Sebastian Vettel has been pushed from 2nd to 5th. Placing McLaren Drivers Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton 2nd and 3rd, close behind Mark Webber.
