Monaco GP: Lap by Lap Report
Welcome to the Monaco GP. 78 laps will be covered on this circuit.
The grid:
Red Bull's Mark Webber has the pole for the race which is crucial for a successful race on a track like Monaco where overtaking is nearly impossible. Robert Kubica of Renault is next to him on the grid. Sebastian Vettel is on P3 and Felipe Massa is on P4. Hamilton and Rosberg are on the third row of the grid. Schumacher and Button are on P7 and P8. Rubens Barrichello and Vitantonio Liuzzi completes the top ten on the grid. Nico Hulkenberg and Adrian Sutil are next on the grid. Sebastien Buemi and Vitaly Petrov are on the seventh row. Pedro de la Rosa and Kamui Kobayashi are on P15 and P16. Alguesuari and Kovalainen are next on the grid. Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock are on row 10. Lucas di Grassi, Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok are the last on the grid.

Welcome to Round 6 of the Formula 1 Season. This is one of the slowest tracks of Formula 1. Alonso who had a shunt in the 3rd Practice session will start from the pit lane. It's the Red Bulls who have taken pole in all the 6 starts. Will Webber win the street race starting from pole? We'll find out very soon. Five of the last 10 races have been won from pole position. Track temperature is 40 degrees. It's a nice and sunny day in Monaco and there are no signs of rain to play spoil sport.
Start
The Five lights illuminate and the Monaco GP is on!
Vettel has a good start. He gets past Kubica. Massa is in 4th. A clean start by all drivers. Button had a poor start and is in P11. Nico has a shunt inside the tunnel. Alonso is in the pits for a change of tyres. A very smart move by the Ferrari team. Its Mark Webber who is currently in 1st position.
Lap 3
Buttons race is over. He has a mechanical failure while going behind the safety car. There is a big delay as Nico Hulkenberg's car has to be lifted manually by the stewards from the end of the tunnel as there is no way a crane can be put in that position.
Lap 6
Safety car will pull in at the end of this lap.
Lap 7
Webber doesn't waste any time. He pulls away from the pack. It's a Red Bull 1,2. Then it's Kubica, followed by Massa. Lewis is in 5th position, it Rubens in 6th position, Schumacher in 7th, Nico in 8th. Liuzzi in 9th and Sutil in 10th complete the top 10. Alonso is in 20th position.Its getting very difficult for him to get past the back markers.
Lap 10
Alonso gets past Lucas di Grassi. He is now in 19th position slowly making his way ahead. Meanwhile Webber still leads the race. Massa is about 6 sec behind race leader in 4th position.
Lap 14
Alonso is all over the Virgin Racing car of Timo Glock. He overtakes him finally. Alonso is now in 18th
Lap 17
Webber has the fastest lap. He has now got a big gap from his team mate Vettel. Lewis is in the pits now. He is just ahead of Alonso in 15th position. A smart move by the Mclaren team. Alonso is now in 16th position. He is about 38 seconds behind the race leader.
Lap 20
Massa is in the pits, so is Schumacher. Massa joins in 9th position.
Lap 22
Kubica is in the pits now. Nico now is in 3rd position. Webber and Vettel have yet to make their rounds of pit stop. Meanwhile Alonso is still behind Lewis in 8th position.
Lap 24
Webber finally gets into the pits. Pedro in the pits his brakes all up in smoke. It's race over for him. It's Webber who takes 1st position followed by Nico who is yet to make his pit stop. Vettel is in 3rd, Kubica is in 4th, Kamui Kobayashi who has yet to make his pit stop is in 5th, then its Massa in 6th, Lewis in 7th and Alonso in 8th. It is getting very difficult for Alonso to get past Lewis.
Lap 28
Problems in the pits for Trulli. The nuts not coming out of the rear right wheel. It's game over for Lucas di Grassi. Engine problems for him.
Lap 29
Nico gets into the pits and so does Heikki. Problems again for the Lotus team. They are unable to remove the wheel nut of heikkis car. Nico comes out just behind Schumacher in 8th position. Alonso is now in 6th position. Lewis is in 5th position and Massa is in 4th position.
Lap 32
Safety car is on the track. Rubens car parked facing the opposite side of the track. He has a major shunt. It could be a suspension failure. Both the Williams are out of the race now. Mark Webber is in 1st position behind the safety car. He had gained a big gap from the 2nd position car of Vettel. He now has to start all over again.
Lap 34
Safety car returns to the pits and the race is on. Its Webber in 1st position, followed by Vettel in 2nd, then its Kubica in 3rd, Massa in 4th, Lewis in 5th, Alonso in 6th, Schumacher in 7th, Nico in 8th, and Sutil ahead of Liuzzi in 9th. 10 seconds separate the top 10 cars.
Lap 38
Lewis slowing down a bit. He has been advised to take care of his brakes. This is a good chance for Alonso to close in on Lewis and possibly overtake him. Meanwhile it's the Renault powered engines that take the top 3 positions. Its Webber followed by Vettel followed by Kubica in his Renault.
Lap 43
Safety car has been deployed once again. Webber had opened a gap of 4 sec ahead of Vettel. There is a drain cover loose in turn 3.
Lap 45
Safety car goes back to the pits and the race continues. Webber makes a good start. Hamilton has a poor start and Alonso is all over him. It's been a clean start by all the drivers.
Lap 49
Webber leads the Monaco Gp. He sets the fastest lap of the race - 1:16:505. He is 3 sec ahead of Vettel. Meanwhile there is no change in positions for the top 10 drivers. Meanwhile both the HRT drivers are on track.
Lap 55
Not much dramas on the track. Its Webber in 1st, Vettel in 2nd, and Kubica in 3rd position. Alonso is about 13 seconds behind race leader. He is in 6th position. Meanwhile both the Force India drivers are in the points. Alonso has reduced his speed and Schumacher is now catching up on him.
Lap 60
Meanwhile Webber does another fastest lap - 1:15:832. Alonso is now about 4 sec behind Lewis. Looks like he is preserving his tyres as he was the first one to change his tyres.
Lap 62
Problem for Heiki in the pit stop. Bruno Senna also enters the pit lane. Its game over for him. Meanwhile Kubica is on fire. He is closing on Vettel. But its very difficult to overtake in the streets of Monaco. Massa is also matching Kubicas speed. He is also closing in. There are still 16 laps to go and any mistake by Vettel could stop him from getting on to the podium.
Lap 69
Webber is in the lead, followed by Vettel in his Red Bull. Kubica is in 3rd position. Massa in the first of the Ferraris is in 4th positon. Lewis the only McLaren is in 5th. Alonso who started his race from the pits is in 6th position.
Lap 72
Vettel now does the fastest lap of the race - 1:15:192. It was a scorcher of a lap. Robert Kubica sets his personal fastest lap.
Lap 74
Karun Chandhok and Trulli have a big shunt. Trulli flies over Karun. Karun manages to duck in time. That was a very bad move by Trulli. Thankfully both the drivers come out safely from their cars. Safety car will be deployed for sure.
Lap 76
Its race over for the Russian rookie Vitaly Petrov. Looks like the race will get over behind the safety car.
Final Lap
Safety car is still on the track. Its been a superb race for both the Red Bulls. Mark Webber comes 1st, vettel 2nd, Kubic is 3rd, Massa in 4th , Lewis in 5th, Schumacher manages to get past Alonso just as the safety car leaves the track and the flags were green. Michael Schumacher crossed the finish line in sixth place after overtaking Fernando Alonso on the final lap of the race when the team believed that the track had gone green and racing had resumed after the fourth and final safety car period.
Schumacher's cheeky move does not go unpunished as he subsequently received a 20 second time penalty from the stewards after the race which the team is now appealing.
This means Fernando finished sixth, Rosberg seventh, Sutil 8th, Liuzzi 9th and Buemi finishing in the top ten. Schumacher is 12th behind Alguesuari.
This was an incident packed race. There were 12 retirements. Jarno Trulli, Karun Chandhok and Vitaly Petrov have been classified as race finishes as they had completed more than 90% of the race. For the HRT, BMW Sauber, Williams, Lotus and Virgin teams, this has been an expensive race as none of their cars crossed the finish line. Jenson Button, who led the driver's championship till now, too was out of the race due to an engine failure. Karun Chandhok might need more than an helmet change after Trulli collided with him, sending the latter's car flying mere centimeters above Chandhok's head.
This was Webbers 2nd win of the season. What a race by Fernando Alonso who started from the pit lane and came 6th. It was a great strategy by the Ferrari crew to get him in when the first safety car came out on track.
We now head to Turkey in two weeks time.
