Japanese GP: Lap by Lap Report

Welcome to Suzuka for the Japanese GP. It's Race 15 of the 19 race 2010 season and the battle for championship has reached new heights. There are still five contenders for the championship and podium finishes have become essential to keep the chances alive. The track is a warm 35°ree;C and the sky is clear.

Grid
The Red Bulls are in front with Sebastian Vettel taking pole. Robert Kubica and Fernando Alonso are behind them.  Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg are on row 3. Barrichello and Hamilton following a 5 place penalty for changing the gear box are on P7 and 8.Nico Hulkenberg and Michael Schumacher complete the top ten. Nick Heidfeld and Felipe Massa are on row 6. Petrov and Kobayashi are next on the grid. Sutil and Alguesuari are on P15 and 16. On Row 9 are Liuzzi and Buemi. The two Lotus drivers are next on the grid. Timo Glock, Bruno Senna and  Sakon Yamamoto are the last on the grid.

Five lights illuminate...
It's an explosion of debris from the back of the back as the cars speeds off the grid. Petrov and Hulkenberg crashed into each other and sent debris flying all over the grid. Yellow flags are out and a safety car will be deployed to rid the track of the debris. The cars haven't reached the first corner yet and Massa's aggression puts him out of the race and he takes Liuzzi with him. Massa gets clipped by Rosberg and skids across the track, colliding into the Force India.

At the end of the lap with five cars out of the race, it's Sebastian Vettel leading the race with Kubica, Webber, Alonso, Button, Hamilton, Barrichello, Schumacher, Heidfeld and Sutil completing the top ten. Sutil is the biggest winner of the pack after gaining five places. The safety car is out

Lap 3
Kubica's missing a wheel. He is driving through the track without his rear right tyre.  He parks the car in a safe spot to avoid costing anyone else a race. He is out of the race. There ends Renault's hopes of a championship points and probably a podium finish. The safety car's still out and will remain for even longer in order to remove the Renault.

Lap 7
The safety car dives into the pits and the race commences. Rosberg is trapped behind slower cars. He pushes hard to get past the Toro Rosso of Buemi. He overdoes his manoeuvre and goes offtrack. His team mate is in a similar mood. Schumacher closes in aggressively on his ex teammate Barrichello and overtakes him.

Sebastian Vettel holds on to his race lead as Webber, Alonso, Button, Hamilton, Schumacher, Barrichello, Heidfeld, Sutil and Alguesuari trails behind.

Lap 12
Vettel is the fastest man on the track. He is pushing the Red Bull to its limit and clocks another fastest lap at 1:37.047.

Lap 21
Barrachello rejoins  the race at P12 after his tyre change.

Timo Glock and Sakon Yamamoto battles for P16. Karun Chandhok must be watching this and thinking "that should be me holding back the Virgin". Glock is pulling all the moves to overtake the HRT.

Lap 26
The previous laps saw the four of the top five drivers going in for a tyre change. It's Jenson Button, who opted for the prime tyres, with the race lead with Vettel, Webber, Alonso, Hamilton, Kobayashi, Rosberg, Shumacher, Heidfeld, Barrichello and Sutil traing behind. Hamilton in his new set of tyres is flying through the track and has set a new fastest lap at 1:35.675

Lap 36
McLaren's gamble of putting prime tyres on Button at the start of the race seems to have flopped. Vettel's Red Bull is hot on his tail and his race lead may soon disappear.

Lap 38
Button dives into the pits. With only a small lead over the Red Bulls, he has no chance of keeping his position. He rejoins the race at P5, behind Hamilton.

Lap 40
Hamilton complains to his team over the radio that he has lost third gear. This is a big problem as various corners require gear 3 or lower.

Lap 45
Force India's day just went from bad to worse. Sutil who was in P10 is out of the race with an oil problem. A great plume of smoke is emanating from his car's rear. He spins out on his oil slick and narrowly misses the oncoming traffic. He is not making any friends with his actions. He decides not to park the car on the side of the track and drives on and finally into the pit lane.

Final Lap
Red Bull had the race firmly in their hands from the start. Vettel recreates last year's magic as he takes the chequered in Japan two years in a row.

Webber came in second and Alonso claimed the final podium position. Button who got ahead of Hamilton following the latter's gear trouble. Schumacher does the rare act of finishing ahead of his team mate and finished sixth. Rosberg crashing out is the true reason behind it. Kobayashi, Heidfeld and Barracello finished 7th, 8th and 9th respectively with Buemi claiming the final point scoring point.

With three races remaining in the 2010 season, the fight for the championship has reached new heights. Join us in two weeks for the debut Korean GP.
