Canadian GP: Lap by Lap Report
Welcome to the Canadian GP coming back after a years break. The only race this season in North America, Montreal. Its nice and sunny and the temperature is about 25 C. Lewis did a cracker of a Qualifying yesterday and takes pole outqualifying the two Red Bulls. This is the first time we don't have a Red Bull on pole this season. This is a track which is very demanding on the brakes and the Red Bull Racing team are a bit concerned about both their cars. It is race 8th of the 2010 Formula1 season and has 70 laps.
The Grid:
Lewis Hamilton takes pole. Alongside him in P2 is Vettel. Mark Webber goes down from P2 to P7 as he had to change his gear box. Very unfortunate for him. Fernando Alonsos Ferrari on 3rd , McLaren's Jenson Button, Force India's Vitantonio Liuzzi and Ferrari's Felipe Massa, moving up to fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Then it's Mark Webber in 7th. Robert Kubica, Adrian Sutil & Nico Rosberg take 8th, 9th, & 10th places respectively. Then it's both the Williams of Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg who take 11th and 12th positions. Michael Schumacher is in 13th place. It's the Russian rookie in 14th, followed by the two Toro Rosso's of Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari. The two BMW's of Pedro de la Rosa and Kamui Kobayashi take 17th and 18th place, followed by the two Lotus Racing drivers, Heikki Kovalainen & Jarno Trulli in 19th and 20th place. Timo Glock goes ahead of his teammate in 21st place. Then it's the two Brazilian's, Bruno Senna & Lucas di Grassi taking 22nd and 23rd place. Finally the only Indian driver Karun Chandhok driving the HRT is in 24th place.
Race Start:
As always the Five lights illuminate.... and the race is on!
Massa and Tonio have a shunt at the start. They would need to head to the pits. Schumi has a great start. He goes from 13th on the grid to 8th. Pedro is in the pits and so is Tonio. Massa comes in as well. Kobayashis race is over in the opening lap.
Lap 4
Its Lewis in P1 followed by Vettel in P2. Alonso is in P3. Webber is all over Button, and Kubica is behind Webber.
Lap 5
Webber finally overtakes Button to take 4th place. Nico in the pits for a change in tyres. Its Kubicas turn now. All the cars in the softer tyres are having a tough time. Advantage Vettel and Mark Webber as they are on the harder tyres.
Lap 7
Hamilton and Alonso head into the pits. Smart move as the Red Bulls were all over the McLaren of Hamilton and the Ferrari of Alonso. Alonso overtakes Hamilton in the pits. Great job by the Ferrari crew. Lewis goes over the white line. Will he be given a drive though penalty? We'll find out soon. Alonso takes 6th position and Lewis takes 8th place. Its going to be a tough race ahead for both the drivers. Nico Hulkenberg also into the pits earlier on for a change of his front wing.
Lap 11
Its Vettel in 1st place followed by Webber. Schumi is in 3rd place. Drive through penalty for car 11. Buemi is in 4th. Alonso is in 5th. Massa is in 22nd place. Things arent going well for Massa.
Lap 13
Schumi in the pit lane for a change of tyres. He comes out in 7th place. Rubens comes in as well. Sutil is in 9th place.
Lap 14
Mark Webber into the pits this time around. He drops down from 2nd to 6th. Its Vettel in the pits now. He comes out ahead of Webber. He takes 5th place. Buemi for the first time is the race leader. Alonso makes a mistake while overtaking Buemi and Lewis takes advantage. As a result Lewis takes the race lead. Buemi heads to the pits. Lots of drama going on in the incident packed race. Schumi once again into the pits! Its Lewis in 1st place followed by Fernando Alonso.
Lap 18
Nico does a fastest lap. He is in 9th place. Meanwhile lewis has started to pull away from the pack. He is in 1st place. Alonso in 2nd, Jenson in 3rd, Vettel in 4th. Sutil is in 7th place. Schumi is all over Jamie Alguesuari. He is currently in 12th place. Massa is in 14th place. Tonio who had a shunt with Massa at the start is currently in 13th place ahead of Massa. He has a lot of catching to do. Karun is in 22nd place. The last of the drivers. This is turning out to be a very unpredictable race.
Lap 26
Lewis into the pits. Looks like a routine pit stop. He joins in 5th place. Aonso is the new race leader now.
Lap 28
Vettel, Jenson Button, Sutil into the pits. Sutil had a rear tyre puncture.
Lap 29
Alonso into the pits. Mark Webber take 1st place. Lewis is in 2nd place and Alonso is in 3rd place. Meanwhile theres a great battle going on between the two Force India drivers. Sutil finally manages to get past his team mate Tonio.
Lap 32
Pedros race is over. An engine failure probably. Meanwhile Vettel has upped his pace. He is catching Button very quickly. Vettel is currently in 5th place. Webber is still the race leader and is about 10.7 seconds ahead of Lewis. Lewis is in 2nd place, and Alonso is in 3rd place. Karun is in 20th place. Schumi is in 10th place. Sutil in 11th, Tonio in 12th and Massa who does a fastest lap is in 13th place.
Lap 40
Its Webber still in 1st place. Lewis is in 2nd place, Alonso in 3rd. Massa is all over the back of Tonio. He is in 13th place. He is unable to get past the Force India car. Lewis does a fastest lap this time. Webbers tyres are degrading. Jenson Button meanwhile is in 4th place and Vettel is in 5th place.
Lap 45
Alonso does the fastest lap. He is very close to Lewis. They have to cross all the back mackers now and its getting very difficult for the top three drivers. Webber has already lost 6 seconds. Alonso is just .5 seconds behind Lewis. 3.6 seconds is currently the gap between race leader Mark Webber and Lewis Hamitlon. He has lost nearly 11 seconds thanks to the back markers.
Lap 47
Trulli has a brake problem and he retires in the pit lane. Webbers tyres are going from bad to worse and so is Vettels. Webber is struggling for grip. Lewis and and Alonso are now 2 seconds behind him.
Lap 49
Massa overtakes Tonio. Lewis meanwhile overtakes Webber. He is now in 1st place. Alonso is now all over Webbers Red Bull.
Lap 50
Webber finally into the pits. He drops into 5th place. Massa who is in 12th place is battling it out with Adrian Sutil. Schumi who has done 3 pit stops so far is in 8th place.
Lap 54
Massa finally gets past Sutil. He now takes 11th place. Webber meanwhile is having a tough time overtaking the backmarkers. He is now trying to get past Massa.
Lap 56
Button gets past Alonso who looses momentum thanks to Karun chandhok who didn't give him enough space. Very unfortunate for Alonso. It's a McLaren 1,2 now.
Lap 60
Buemi is driving a second faster than Schumi. Buemi is closing in on him. He is in 9th position. Kubica comes into the pit lane. Meanwhile button is closing in on Lewis.
Lap 61
Buemi does it finally. He overtakes Schumi. Hamilton just does the fastest lap. He has created a 3 second gap from his team mate Jenson Button. Alonso is in 3rd position. Vettel in 4th, Webber in 5th. Meanwhile Massa gets into the points. He is in 10th place.
Lap 65
Massa closes in on Schumi but his front wing gets damaged in the battle. There are only six laps remaing. Will he enter the pits? Yes he does. He comes into the pits. Advantage Force India. Tonio takes the last championship point.
Final Lap
Tonio is all over Schumi. He is fighting for 9th position now. It's a McLaren 1,2. Alonso is in 3rd place. Scuderia Ferrari have something to celebrate after a real long time. Vettel comes 4th, Webber takes 5th position. Tonio and Sutil get past Schumi in the final lap to take the final championship points. Indian driver Chandhok takes 18th place. Massa takes 15th place.
