Belgium GP: Lap by Lap Report
Welcome to Spa, Belgium for race 13 of the 2010 Season. The weather couldn't get more unpredictable with prospects of rain. Tyre Selection and strategy couldn't get more important. This race means a lot to Barrichello, who's gunning his engines for the 300thtime in his F1 career. Red Bull's Mark Webber is at pole, with Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica following him at at P2 and P3 respectively.
The Grid
Red Bull has pole yet again with Mark Webber at P1. Mc Laren's Lewis Hamilton is beside him. On Row 2 is Renault's Robert Kubica and the second Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel. The current World Champion Jenson Button and Ferrari's Felipe Massa are in P5 and P6 respectively. Rubens Barrichello and Adrian Sutil are on row 4. Nico Hulkenberg and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso complete the top ten. Jamie Alguesuari and Vitantonio Liuzzi are on row 6. Sebastian Buemi along with Heikki Kovalainen are on P13 and 14 respectively. Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli are on row 8. Nico Rosberg following a penalty and Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi are on P17 and 18. The HRT drivers Bruno Senna and Sakon Yamamoto are on row 10. Seven time World Champion Michael Schumacher owing to a penalty from the previous race for forcing ex-team mate Rubens Barrichello to the wall is starting at P21 with Sauber's Pedro de la Rosa beside him. Lucas diGrassi and Vitaly Petrov complete the Grid.
Five lights illuminate....
Mark Webber has a terrible start and falls back to P7. Hamilton seizes the opportunity and gains race lead. Kubica is at P2. Button is third. Behind him are Vettel, Massa, Sutil, Webber, Alonso, Barrichello and Hulkenberg.
Lap 2
Barrichello loses control and crashes into Alonso. Barrichello is out of the race and the crash is sure to ruin the race for Alonso as well.
Alonso and Kobayashi hit the pits. Alonso reenters the race at P18. Kobayashi's facing trouble as well as his crew isn't ready with the tyres.
Lap 6
Bruno Senna's out of the race. Lewis Hamilton is informed via radio that there is no more rain to be expected at the moment.
Lap 10
Hamilton still has race lead. 5.5 secs behind him is his team mate Button and half a second behind him is Vettel. Kubica, Webber, Massa, Sutil, Hulkenberg, Liuzzi and Rosberg are coming up from behind, making up the top ten.
Lap 11
Petrov, in a brilliant move overtakes Rosberg. Rosberg, while trying to recover his position aggressively, makes contact with team-mate Michael Schumacher and loses his front wing.
Lap 17
Vettel and Button Collide! Vettel's aggressive manoeuvres and the slippery track are to blame. Button's out of the race as Vettel's car punched a hole in his radiator.
Lap 21
Vettel is given a drive through penalty for the collision with Button. Vettel overtakes Vitantonio but the Force India driver steals back his position with ease.
It's still Hamiltion leading the race, with Kubica, Webber, Massa, Sutil, Schumacher, Rosberg, Kobayashi, Alonso and Petrov completing the top ten.
Lap 23
Webber makes a perfect pitstop and re-enters the race at P4. The next laps seethe remaining front runners head for the pits. After the pit stops, Hamilton, Kubica, Webber, Massa, Sutil, Schumacher, Rosberg, Kobayashi, Alonso and Petrov make up the top ten.
Lap 26
Vettel and Liuzzi collide making Liuzzi losehis front wing. The collision happened as Liuzzi was about to dive into the pits, which means the Force India driver is getting a new front wing along with his set of tyres. Vettel unfortunately, isn't so lucky. His rear tyre develops a puncture and he has to go out on a limb for the next 7kms before he can get them changed.
Massa sets the fastest lap at 1:50.111. He is radioed "Next rain in 10 laps"
Vettel leaves the pits &rejoins the race at P20, lapped by the top 8 drivers.
Lap 31
Hamilton pushes hard and is flying through the track, increasing his lead to over 12 secs and sets the fastest lap at 1:49.218. Behind him are Kubica, Webbber, Massa, Sutil, Schumacher, Kobayashi, Rosberg, Alonso and Petrov.
Lap 35
Hamilton's McLaren loses grip on the slippery track, goes off track but is lucky as he regains control and avoids hitting the wall. Hamilton and Kubica enter the pits and come out at P1 and P3 respectively.
Lap 38
Alonso spins out, crashes into the wall and is out of the race with a broken suspension. His car's lying in the middle of the track and the safety car is out to get him.
Lap 41
Rosberg and Schumacher battle for 6th. Rosberg wins &gets ahead. Trulli spins off track but narrowly escapes crashing into the walls. Visiblility is at a minimum as rain batters the track. It's amazing that the race is still collision free.
It's Hamilton with the race lead. Webber, Kubica, Massa, Sutil, Rosberg, Schumacher, Kobayashi, Petrov and Alguesuari are trailing behind him.
Final Lap
Lewis Hamilton had the race in his hands right from the word go and takes the chequered flag. Mark Webber comes in second and Robert Kubica takes the final podium position. Behind them are Massa, Sutil, Rosberg, Schumacher, Kobayashi, Petrov and Alguesuari.
